Education standards
Sir, — The Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) in. his address to the southern regional conference of the Secondary Schools Boards’ Association (“The Press,” May 17) said that pupils will not be helped by returning to old discarded methods that caused them to fear and hate school. He is obviously an advocate of permissive, playway education. Has this form of education made our society healthier since its inception about 30 years ago? I think not. Hard work, discipline and sacrifice made
the British supreme. Will our educators and politicians have the sense to save us from the fate of Greece and Rome? — Yours, etc., GORDON VERNON THOMAS May 18, 1978.
