Sydenham Park
Sir, — I thank Warwick Butler for information not obtainable by an “elementary check” or any other way. A pastor of the first Samoan group using the old Methodist church told me they were leaving because the building was coming down. About the same time, the Mayor, Mr Hay, assured me that Syden-
ham Park would be saved. On a 3ZB talk-back before the municipal elections, Mr Hay refused to answer me concerning the church and other matters because, he said, he recognised my voice and I had a “vested interest” in the expressway. My denial was not broadcast. I do not know about vested interests, but it appeared that the beautiful shrubs and trees of Nazareth House were bulldozed to save the paltry gardens of a factory opposite, and the cost of rebuilding the noble brick wall would have gone a long way towards clearing the Canterbury Museum’s deficit. — Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. May 19, 1978.
