Social Welfare

Sir, — Margaret Mayer’s attack on the Minister of Social Welfare (May 18) is inaccurate and uncalled for. Mr Walker’s efforts are directed to saving marriages rather than taxpayer’s money. During the term of

the last Labour Government social welfare benefits to those living in de- facto relationships exceeded those of legally married couples. In a society which once upheld moral standards this was a deplorable situation. Mr Walker is endeavouring to see that the sanctity of marriage is upheld and that today’s children are given the security and background of a proper home to which they are entitled. — Yours, J. F. GARVEY. May 19, 1978.
