Orlov trial

Sir, — If, as Graham Rhind alleges, (May 20) the trial of Yuri Orlov is a travesty of justice and human rights — indicating sickness and a rapidly approaching crisis in the Soviet system (he hopes) — then the same judgment must be applied to the far worse — and little publicised — violations of human rights which occur in 120 other nations (according to the authoritative and objective group, Amnesty International). Would Mr Rhind not also agree that the multi-national companies which control half the “free world’s” productive capacity and almost two-thirds of its finance are also violating human rights by draining the very life-blood of desperately poor nations — especially in Africa and Latin America? If, as he also says, “history teaches that no communist system can survive indefinitely” then capitalism is indeed doomed. — Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. May 20, 1978.
