Big meat contract lost
Southland’s freezing indusCtry has been hit by the loss of a $750,000 contract at Ocean Beach, and the suspension of all freezing workers at Mataura. They were the results of separate disputes that caused load-out bans at the Ocean Beach, Mataura, and Makarewa works.
The sailing of the Sevillan Reefer from Bluff on Friday without the 650 tonnes of prime lamb that it was supposed to load from Ocean Beach, almost certainly meant the end for a contract worth $764,000, said the general manager (Mr W. E. Kirk). The contract was vith the Jordanian Government for its armed forces, and would have fetched premium prices. A further 200 tonnes from other freezing works was loaded. Mr Kirk said the loss of the contract should give a clear warning of New Zealand’s export meat trade prospects. “If we can’t honour our contracts, then New Zealand just won’t get them, and it’s a very lucrative market,” he said.
