Awapawa goats defended
Parliamentary reporter
Na action should be taken on the question of the Arapawa Island goats until the interim committee set up to form an Arapawa Island Wildlife Trust had had an opportunity to discuss the problems involved with the various departments concerned, said Mrs M. D. Batchelor (Lab., Avon). “It would be a tragedy if these unique animals became extinct,” Mrs Batchelor said. “Apart from the rights of future generations to have the opportunity to enjoy these animals, there is the question of their benefit as a natural resource.
"The Arapawa goats can be used as a basis for Angora herds, and their hair could become an export commodity. They could also become one of New Zealand’s tourist attractions. Certainly the historic element should be kept in mind. It is to be hoped that the Government will give this matter very serious thought.”
Mrs Batchelor has sent the following telegram to all members of Parliament:—
“Respectfully ask your support that no action be taken which would affect the wildlife of Arapawa Island until further discussion is held between the interim trust committee and the Government departments concerned.”
