Affirmed’s Derby
NZPA Louisville Affirmed, ridden by Steve Cauthen. aged 18, took charge of the home turn and held off his archrival. Alydar, through the straight to win the $239,400 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Affirmed, close to the pace through the first mile of the famous li-mlle race. brought Cauthen his first Derby, just six days short of two years from the date when he began his riding career at the same track. Believe It was third.
Alydar made a desperate late bid on the rail, but Cauthen and Affirmed would not be denied.
Affirmed finished a length and a half in front of Alydar, which was one length and a quarter in front of Believe It. Darby Creek Road was fourth.
It was Affirmed’s fifth victoryin seven meetings with Alydar.
