PA Auckland Inquiries were held into the failures of the well-backed runners, Golden Fox and Noble Mistress, in the Nolan Handicap at Auckland on Saturday. After hearing from the stipendiary stewards and their assistants and the rider, B. S. Compton, the judicial committee decided that Noble Mistress did not handle the track conditions and was well tried by her rider.
The failure of Golden Fox was due, the committee found, to his failure to get quickly to the front from where he has shown his best form.
The rider of Lovestruck. D. A. Peake, was warned after trying to Improve his mount with 200 m to go, where there was insufficient room. Lovestruck went for a run on the inside of Big Gamble, then had to change course sharply to the inside.
The improved showing of River Queen, winner of the second leg. the Ellerslie Five Thousand, was due, the committee found, to the shorter 1400 m distance and improved footing.
