Don’t blame the ref.

If the Marist senior rugby team loses its C.S.B. Cup game to Hornby at Lancaster Park south this afternoon it will be treading dangerous ground to blame the referee.

The referee is Mr Tom Hannan, who could be excused a few nerves in taking what W’ill be his first match as a senior referee. It will not be made any easier by the fact that Marist is a club he has had a lengthy association with.

As a first five-eighths, Mr Hannan had about six seasons with the Marist senior side in the 1960 s and after his retirement he switched to coaching, and spent the last four years up to 1972 as the club’s senior coach. He then turned to refereeing. However, today’s tough “baptism” is not worrying Mr Hannan too much. “Once a game gets started the teams are just colours and I don’t think my past association with Marist will even enter my head,” he said. Mr Hannan is one of two referees making their senior debuts today. The other is Mr Doug Calvert, who will control the game between High School Old Boys and Merivale-Papanui at Straven Road.
