Punishment for litterers
Sir, — Your report last Tuesday headed “Prison terms urged for littering” made interesting reading, but the punishments recommended do not particularly fit the crimes. The Litter Control Council is advocating a two months jail term for anyone depositing dangerous or poisonous litter. It is also urging that the Litter Act, 1968. be amended to provide fines of up to $4OO for persons depositing such litter; irj the instance of bodies corporate, fines of up to $2000; and individual litterers to be served with offence notices on the spot and later fined $2O. But why a prison term? This is another charge on- the taxpayer. Would not periodic detention be more fitting. Some companies may fork out such fines easily enough but the executives responsible will not take their duties lightly faced with the prospect of serving up to 26 week-ends of hard slogging clearing up the mess left by others. — Yours, etc., ALBION WRIGHT.
