‘Risk still' of hill fires
Fire bans may have been lifted, but there is still a constant risk of the spread of inadequately controlled fires, according to Sir Robert Macfarlane, chairman of the health and general committee of the Christchurch City Council.
He said people living along hills from Cannon Hill to Scarborough should take extreme care, and not have fires in the open until the dry conditions lifted. “Although advice from the Forest Service and Fire Service does not support an over-all fire ban, residents should not light any fires in conditions which are likely to constitute a danger to any person or property,” said Sir Robert.
