Mr Reid, now a New Zealand selector, was hit on the ear by a cricket ball while coaching at Waitaki Boys’ High School. It happened after a Plunket Shield match against Wellington, where the then Otago star tried to bowl just a little faster at the Wellington opening batsman, Laurie Miller, and pulled a hamstring, putting him out of play. “While I was out, I was up at
Waitaki doing some coaching, and a young fast bowler, who later played for Otago, let one go at me In the nets ’* The wicket was ft “bit rough” and the ball “stood up off * length.” “It was going to hit me fair between the eyes, ao I turned my head.” The ball smacked into his ear, causing damage which has unpaired his hearing ever since. "Twenty years ago the operation would have been a major job. Now it’s just a minor repair job,” he said yesterday. He expected to be in hospital for a week.
