City study group
A Christchurch “downtown task force” will be set up to diagnose ills of the central business district before it gets too sick. Some councillors said the name suggested by council officers was not appropriate, but the Town Clerk (Mr J. H. Gray) said they "wanted to get a bit of twentieth-century zip” into the name of a group with a big job ahead. They hoped the group would be “a pithy one,” he said, instead of a well
intended, but bogged down, bureaucratic effort. Cr Mollie Clark said the group should be positive and co-operative. It was about 10 years overdue. The task force idea was born in March, after officers and businessmen met to discuss off-street parking. A special committee will maintain continued discussions between councillors and groups, such as the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, about the business district’s wellbeing.
