Consultants on abortion
Sir, — We wish, through the columns of your newspaper, to express our concern about a number of doctors who have been appointed by the supervisory committee as certifying consultants. The list of approved certifying consultants just released include.; 21 doctors who put their names to a strongly worded antiabortion advertisement published in “The Press” on October 12, 1977. These ap-
pointments do not appear to be in accordance with the new Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Law which stipulates that certifying consultants must not hold strong views either way. We feel that women referred to these consultants will not receive the unbiased assessment that we have been led to believe the new law would provide. We wonder whether enough care has been taken to ensure that amongst the consultants appointed there will not be those of extreme persuasion — either too liberal or too restrictive. - Yours, etc., RUTH MERCIER, ELIZABETH DAVIDSON, ROSEMARY ASH, BEVERLEY TRAVENA, JOYCE BARLEY, SALLY MACKAY. Blenheim, April 4, 1978.
