Canty newcomer for netball
PA Hamilton Leigh Mills, of Canterbury is one of the newcomers in the New Zealand netball team for tests against Trinidad and Tobago this month. Maxine Blomquist, also of Canterbury, has been named vice-captain of the team. And two Canterbury girls still in their teens, Geane Katae and Adrianne Prattley, help to bring a touch of youth to the side. The tests, at Palmerston North on April 27 and Christchurch on April 29, are followed by a fortnight’s tour of New South Wales in June, as a leadup to the international tournament in Trinidad and Tobago next year. The New Zealand squad of 10 was named by the selector-coach, Lois Muir
(Otago), after two days of trials at Hamilton were completed late on Saturday. As expected, the team includes the only four trialists with international experience, Lyn Parker (Waikato), who has been appointed captain after being vice-captain in 1974 and 1975, and Maxine Blomquist, Marilyn Munro (Wellington) and Yvonne Willering (Auckland). In addition to Katae, who is 17, and Prattley, 19, the newcomers to the New Zealand side are Margaret Kamana (Wellington), Pauline Knaggs (Wellington), Susan McKay (Auckland) and Leigh Mills. The players will remain together for training at Hamilton until April 17, when they will move to Wellington for further preparation for the tests.
