Russians and Rhodesia

Sir, — M. Creel accuses me of “advocating a rescue operation for the Smith regime.” I am not particularly interested in the few thousand whites in Rhodesia, but as recent events in Cambodia reminded us, a communist take-over of any country results in the murder of 10 to 25 per cent of the inhabitants. For humanitarian reasons, I believe we should try to prevent more communist take-overs by force. If Russia thinks she can get away with military intervention anywhere in the world, het leaders will eventually miscalculate and an atomic holocaust may result. The British Commonwealth should assume responsibility for the Rhodesian problem, and both the Russians and the Americans should be told to keep out. The Americans made a thorough mess in Vietnam, but the British Commonwealth showed, in its restrained campaigns against terrorists in Malaysia, that it could do a good and successful job in defence of democracy. — Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. April 6. 1978.
