Shooting in riverbeds

Sir. — No mere words can convey my utter disgust and anger at the recent announcement by the North Canterbury Catchment Board that duckshooters will again be allowed on the Ashley estuary, and at the Acclimatisation Society’s decision to put forward the commencement of the shooting season to April 15. Hundreds of protected birds inhabit this estuary and the migrant waders including many unique species will still be present. In spite of assurances by official bodies, the lives of protected birds will be at risk and the creatures will be driven away from their feeding grounds. Over the years, my colleagues and I in the Ornithological Society, have spent incalculable numbers of hours studying birdlife and have considerable intellectual capital tied up in this area. We are all entitled to pursue our interests without interference from these selfish promulgators and devotees of bloodsports. — Yours, etc.,

K. C. HARRISON April 6. 1978.
