Shooting in riverbeds
Sir, — I wish to protest, most strongly, against the granting of permission for gamebird shooting in the beds of the Waimakariri and Ashley rivers, as reported in this morning’s issue of “The Press.” This constitutes a danger, nuisance, and quite unjustifiable restriction of the freedom of other people using these areas for a very wide range of recreational activities ranging from picnicking to serious nature studies. Investigations over the last four years show that the lower reaches, par* ticularly of the Ashley and Waipara rivers, shelter a wealth of invaluable and rare bird life; upwards of 50 species may be counted there in the winter months. It is simply hypocrisy to suggest that these birds are neither shot at nor disturbed. Regrettably, for every responsible shooter there are several who will fire at anything that moves. This is proved by the number of protected birds found shot each season. — Yours, P. A. G. HOWELL. April 6, 1978.
