Prince Mardon drowned
PA Wanganui The burly five-year-old Wanganui galloper Prince Mardon was lost in tragic circumstances at the week-end. A gelding by In the Purple, Prince Mardon was drowned when the tow-bar on the float carrying him from Taupiri, where he had been spelling, snapped. The float plunged into the Awakino river, just out of New Plymouth. Prince Mardon was returning to Wanganui to resume racing. He won two races and was placed 14 times, his total stake earnings amounting to $3OOO. Prince Mardon received his name from the surnames of his owners, Messrs R. Prince and R. J. Mardon, of Wellington and was trained by Miss Rosemary Garrity.
