Canty starts well in water polo
“Press” correspondent Auckland Canterbury made a predictably sound start to the national water polo championships at the Newmarket pool, Auckland, yesterday.
In the A grade, Canterbury soundly defeated Auckland, 9-3, although having the national captain, Dennis Reid, fouled out in the third quarter. He and Mark Harding each scored three goals, and Richard Clark, RusSell McConnochie and John Symon the others.
Wellington won its two games in the A grade, beating Com-
blned Services 8-3 and Auckland 7-6 in the torrential rain which lashed the pool.
In the B grade, Canterbury made an outstanding start against the old and experienced Auckland team in a rough encounter.
It won 13-3, with Chris Lewis scoring four goals, Matthew Lewis and Steven Wakefield each scoring three times, and Murray McGlrr, Mark Trembath and Warwick Williamson getting the others
In the other B grade games, Auckland beat Air Force, 12-4; Wanganui beat Army, 15-0, and Bay of Plenty easily overcame the title-holder, Wellington, 10-2.
