Fire in temple kills 15
NZPA-Reuter Manila Fire broke out in a Chinese temple yesterday, killing at least 15 persons. Four persons died on a fire escape on the third floor of the apartment building which had been converted into a Chinese temple in the Santa Cruz district of Manila.
The rest of the dead, including children, were trapped inside the building after noon prayers. The police said the fire began at the temple altar and was brought under control after 45 minutes.
The fire may have been caused by lighted candles falling from the altar. The police said there were 15 confirmed dead, but the number could be higher.
It was the third large fire in Manila in two months. Forty-seven persons including foreign tourists, died in a hotel fire on November 14. On December 16, fire swept through a psychiatric hospital, killing 33 male patients.
