Weeds may cost N.R.B. $½M p.a.
Wellington reporter The National Roads Board might have to spend an extra $500,000 each year to control noxious weeds along State highways. An amendment to the Noxious Weeds Act makes the Crown responsible for the control of noxious weeds in the same way that private individuals are now.
I’he board will be bound to control weeds along all State highways which are adequately fenced. Where the road Is not fenced, the adjoining landowner will be responsible for weed control. The $500,000 estimate may be reduced as the weeds come under control It could also be affected if an agreement is reached with other Government departments where adjoin ing land is owned bv the Crown.
