Real charm in recital by quartet
By C FOSTER BROWNE The Camera: a String Quartet — Paulene Smith and Kathryn Wilkinson (violins), Elizabeth Rogers (viola), and Frances De Goidi (cello) — gave the last recital of the present senes in Christchurch cathedral on Fridas. It had a good attendance. It is pleasing to welcome Miss Wilkinson. She takes tht place of Miss Chloe Moon, who has given such sterling service to the quar tet since its formation four years ago. The playing sounded very well indeed in the C athedral, there was sufficient resonance to give life, without causing confusion through echo Balance was satisfactory and quality of tone sumptuous and refreshing. Haydn's Quartet in (... Opus 33 No 3. was played thoroughly stylishly, with splendid balance. The musu was suave and rich. Dvorak's Quartet tn F major. Op. 96 (the American quartet) had simplicity and directness, and created a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The whole work ended joyously and with vigour, and with adventurously outgiving melodic plentv This was a completely charming recital.
