Woman stole to pay Brych
I PA Hamilton; : A woman who stole to pay a SlOOO account she owed to Mr Milan Brych was given a deferred sentence when she, appeared in the Magistrate’s! Court at Hamilton for sen-j tence. Glennis Mary Clark, aged; 35, had earlier pleaded guilty) to charges of fraud, theft, and forgery. Mr J. E. Millar, S.M., said he realised that Clark had been under considerable, pressure. She had been urged (to pay Mr Milan Brych for (treatment for what “she at least” thought was cancer, i “It doesn’t seem that anybody else thought this,” the (Magistrate said. He said Clark was under treatment, as this was proved by an “obviously genuine” letter signed by some person on behalf of Mr Brych, which . was produced in court. The letter said that Mr Brych would be practising in I Rarotonga and suggested . “that would not be terribly i far away,” said the Magis- . trate. i Clark had used her position as secretary of the
>tockcar Drivers’ Association o obtain a total of $1631 by heft, fraud, and forgery. Some of the money had been ised to buy clothing and >resents for the 10 children ;he provided for. Before coming to court zesterday, Clark had raised i mortgage on her share of a touse to cover complete comlensation. Her counsel, Mr R. H. K. lerram, said she hoped to get i job to pay the money back is soon as possible. The Magistrate said he :onsidered the defendant was n a confused state of mind vhen the offences were comnitted and was under presume from various sources, ‘not least the concern about ler health. “Any fine imposed would lot so much punish her as >unish her family,” he said. Clark was convicted and irdered to come up for senence if called upon within hree years, and must pay compensation of $1631 to the complainant. “I think she is the type of verson where punishment is lublicity. It will be such that will impose no further penilty,” the Magistrate said.
