Rain halts tennis
Rain forced a halt in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s Show Weekend tournament at Wilding Park yesterday and matches will be concluded next Saturday. The women’s singles have been played. Robyn Hunt beat Shirley Haig 41-32 in the final on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Hunt went through the two-life section without a loss. The final of the knockout section was won by J. Snell. She beat J. Wilson 43-40 in a close match. The final of the women’s second life doubles has been played in which Mrs Hunt and Carolyn Oakley beat Jean MacDonald and Jane Wilson 6-2.
Stephen Harley and Alan Croad had barely started their final in the first-life section of the men’s singles when it was interrupted by rain. In the second-life section matches between Rhett Mason and Martin Searle and David Shapcott and Michael Mooney were also halted. The first-life doubles final was completed. Harley and Mooney beat Croad and Shapcott 6-3.
Soccer.—Bob Latchfords two goals for Everton against Birmingham have taken him to the joint top of the English first division scoring charts, with Andy Gray, of Aston Villa. Both have scored 12 goals in league and league cup matches this season.
