Go-ahead for Bayi
NZPA-Reuter Dar-Es-Salaam Three 1500 metres races between the world recordholder, Filbert Bayi, of Tanzania, and New Zealand’s Olympic champion, John Walker, will be staged in Australia and New Zealand early next year, the sports promoter -Mr Brian Orbell said yesterday. Tanzanian sports officials have given permission for Bayi to take part in three meetings — one in Australia and two in New Zealand — next February or March, Mr Orbell said.
“We have not yet got
definite sponsorship for these meetings but we are confident this will be forthcoming,” he said. With an Australian promoter, Mr Ken Elphick, and New Zealand’s world 5000 metres record-holder, Dick Quax, Mr Orbell has been touring East Africa recruiting stars for a series of meetings in Australia and New Zealand between January 8 and 28. It was hoped that Bay! and Walker would race at these events but the Tanzanian said on Saturday he would not be fit enough to meet Walker until February.
