Britain’s firemen set to strike

NZPA London Troops began moving into position today ready to take over from 40,000 regular firemen set to take part in Britain’s first national firemen’s strike, starting today. They freely admit they will be able to do little more than cope with minor outbreaks and stop big fires from getting out of hand. About 10,000 servicemen, some with only a few hours training, and using old equipment, will replace the highly trained firemen.

The firemen are claiming 30 per cent wage rises, and the employers have offered 10 per cent, in line with Government pay guidelines. One difficulty is a lack of agreed wage comparisons for firemen.

Union officials will meet the employers today for informal discussions which may produce a concession reducing the present 48-hour week.
