Torre retains chess lead
NZPA-Reuter Manila Eugene Torre, (Philippines) maintained his steamroller performance in the first Asian grand masters chess classic by thrashing the Australian national master, Terry Shaw on Tuesday. But while Torre, who now has three points, held on to the solo leadership in the 13-round, 14-player tournament, the Indonesian national master Arovah Bachtiar was breathing down his neck with 2.5 points. Bachtiar defeated New Zealand’s Murray Chandler, the Asian
junior champion, in 41 moves of a Sicilian defence, Pelican variation, in the day’s only other completed match after the first time control.
