Recycling rubbish
Sir. —Correspondents who advocate recycling of the city’s rubbish have provided ample evidence of the many advantages which accrue financially. Recycling also enhances the environment instead of causing the despoliation usually associated with rubbish disposal. The Mayor of Auckland (Sir Dove-Mver Robinson) expressed satisfaction with the response and co-operation from citizens of that city, to the extent that Mnptv cans were prepared, for example, by the house-
holder’s removing top and bottom of cans, enabling the flattening and preparation for recycling. More advanced techniques overseas result in mechanical sorting speeding up the processing of various materials. Yet some overseas cities, notably New York which has become bankrupt recently, continue to tow refuse out to sea where pollution is reaching saturation point. It behoves us to take action now to prevent future problems.—Yours, etc..
