Drainage problems

Sir, —Your correspondent Ivy Wallace is being pessimistic in her outlook. Yet in view of the present Drainage Board and its lack of action and ideas, I can sympathise with her. What is needed with respect to river and flood control in the Heathcote Rivet is floodgates at the mouth of the river. This would alleviate the excessive flooding of land and properties within this catchment because at peak tides the floodgates would prevent the river back-tracking up the river. I hope Ms Wallace and others concerned about the effect of the Heathcote River on their properties, or even their lives, will consider the forthcoming local body elections, especially the Drainage Board candidates, with a view to their past records and their future ideas. I do not think many incumbents will hold a seat on the board after October 8. —Yours, etc., C. K. HAMPTON. September 1, 1977.
