Wardens for the elderly

Sir. — Your article, "Wardens for the elderly,” brings to mind the needs of manv elderly people and such a scheme as suggested by Cr Peter Blaxal! is a good one. Many problems could be

solved quickly if someone was available as a friend and confidant — someone unbiased and understanding, who could, if necessary, approach councils on their behalf. Many organisations do excellent work on behalf of the elderly; those who gain most are living in council flats. If wardens were appointed the needs of all elderly persons could be considered, including those in their own homes with high rates and maintenance costs who struggle to make ends meet. I would point out to Cr Rex Arbuckle and Cr Bruce Britten that my wife and I like to paddle our own canoe, but many elderly people have lost their paddles and are struggling to get to shore. — Yours, etc., L. W. HOBBY. August 30, 1977.
