Pay agreement
Settlement has been reached in redundancy pay negotiations for five clothing workers at the Tuam Street branch of the Port Hills Trading Company, Ltd. The workers went on strike on Friday in support of their claims for redundancy pay, after they were given a week’s notice last Wendesday. The firm, which has its main factory in Lyttelton,
opened the Tuam Street branch about four months ago, but has decided to close it because of a fall in exports to Australia. Further negotiations yesterday resolved the issue, and an application will be made to the Industrial Commission to approve the redundancy pay. A black ban imposed at the Tuam Street factory, to prevent work being taken to Lyttelton, has been lifted.
