Drivers back their union
Christchurch drivers have voted to keep their present system of compulsory unionism. In a secret ballot at a stop-work meeting yesterday, they voted 997 to 104 to retain the unqualified preference clause relating to union membership in their award.
Members of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union outside Christchurch will vote on the issue at a further 16 stopwork meetings yet to be held in smaller centres.
Oil tanker drivers in Christchurch also backed the retention of the clause, at a meeting last month. Two per cent of the 61 drivers at that meeting sought voluntary unionism. Yesterday’s meeting, attended by 1100 drivers,
also considered proposals to form a national drivers* union. They voted in favour of the principle of a national union, 891 votes to 162.
