Neighbourhood taverns

Sir, —The reply by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) that social drinking is part of the reality of life in New Zealand, and the report (“The Press,” August 27) that alcoholism affects half

a million New Zealanders surely is an indication that more swill pens are not needed. More .facts regarding the evils and dangers, to educate the people, are needed. To encourage families, particularly those not engaged in so-termed social drinking, to become part of what is now a major psychiatric problem for many families, is not the answer. The tax paid by breweries must be tremendous, but is it sufficient to pay the millions needed to keep the broken bodies and homes? Number one priority seems to be money, not people. — Yours, etc.,

L. W. HOBBY. August 29, 1977.
