Reform of local government
Sir, —I was somewhat perturbed at the tone of your editorial “Changes in local government” (“The Press,” August 26). By implication, you say that our system is outmoded and requires pressing changes which will have to be imposed if local bodies continue to resist. Most people will concede, that in some areas a multiplicity of ad hoc bodies and duplication of services, exists. Unfortunately, perhaps to justify their existence, members of the Local Government Commission subscribe to the “big is beautiful” theory, or maybe it is “change for change’s sake.” The public in general and rural people in particular, would be well advised to examine closely any moves towards the formation of monolithic united councils or Other similar bodies. Rural people have direct representation at present and any move to submerge their democratic rights in an urban metropolis must be strongly resisted.—Yours, etc.,
D. T. ARCHBOLD. Cheviot. August 26, 1977.
