Cashmere playground

Sir, — I congratulate Councillors Thompson and Taylor of the Heathcote County Council on the stand they took against giving part of the Cashmere playground to the bowlers. Chairman Tyndall states that the area has been used for “fornication parties” and brick-throwing sessions, presumably by children older than those in the age-group for which the playground was originally intended. The council should ask itself why this is happening. The answer, I suggest, is because young adults in Heathcote County have no place for suitable alternative activities. The population of the county does not consist solely of young children and elderly persons, a fact which most council members and some residents choose to ignore. The revenue which will be received in increased rent from the bowling club’s extension of area should be devoted to providing space for legitimate recreational activities for teenagers who apparently are social outcasts. — Yours, etc., OLIVE FRAMPTON.
