Children in hospital

Sir, —I strongly criticise the sentiments expressed by a North Canterbury Hospital Board candidate regarding rooming-in policy (“The Press,” August 24). Parents should never be obliged to b<* admitted with their sick children. Rooming-in facilities should be available, but pressure to remain at the hospital could greatly increase the stress of parents tom between. their responsi-

bilities to the child in hospital and to the care of other children. Rooming-in facilia blanket policy totally disregards the concept of care in response to individual need, which those of us involved in the health service are trying to implement. I am concerned also at the idea that parents could replace nursing staff. There is no reason why a parent cannot assist with the care of the child where this will best meet the needs of both, but that parents are available should never be used as an excuse to reduce the number of nurses.—Yours, etc..

BEVERLEY HUGHES. August 24, 1977.
