West Coast logging

Sir, — John Wilson’s comparison of th'’ conflicts over logging in northern California and the West Coast is -not very apt. The economy

of the West Coast is not heavily dependent on logging, with only 25 per cent o f economic activity dependent on forestry compared with 80 per cent in the Californian example. There is ,ittle unemployment and West Coast sawmills frequently advertise outside the province for workers. A considerable amount of forestry activity involves the planting and subsequent tending of exotic plantations and these would not be affected by the phasing-out of native forest logging. Also, the West Coast has the ability to absorb a decline .in sawmilling by way of developments which are under way in other industries such as farming and fishing, or by further diversification of forestry into wood processing. — Yours, etc.,
