Recycling rubbish

Sir, — Helen Crabb is to be applauded on her sensible approach to the question of recycling domestic refuse. But one matter needs to be borne in mind. It is changing people’s attitudes and making them aware of their responsibilities to each other and to their environment that makes recycling challenging and difficult. Judging by the statements of Mr T. H. Duston (“The Press,” August 25), much remains to be done to convince the general public that recycling technologies are not only feasible and proven, but also, at least in some cases, very profitable. As one of those “naive" people who believes that this generation has an obligation to reuse, recycle and reclaim our resources, and as someone who has spent much time and effort in helping to operate a glass reclamation centre, I would invite Mr Duston to consult the literature on domestic recycling schemes at the Canterbury Environment Centre. — Yours, etc., JONATHAN BOSTON. August 28, 1977.
