Alpine national parks

Sir, — Well might the Minister of Tourism “be upset” about park board policy in contradiction of its original charter. Nowhere can the 80 per cent of our people who are not trampers get into the alpine level above 1500 m. The foothills make excellent ski-grounds, but are uninteresting for nonskiers. Our only alpine village, Arthur’s Pass, is dying. For over 40 years in the August holidays it was overfull. Now it is depressingly empty. Surely 1 per cent of the alpine parks can be opened for the great majority and 99 per cent left to trampers. The money spent for the latter is quite out of proportion to that for the majority. Our people have to go overseas to get into alpine scenery on borrowed foreign exchange. Further, the access slope to the ski grounds is going to pieces, because of park board policy. — Yours, etc., OSCAR COBERGER. Arthur’s Pass. August 24, 1977.
