Big victories in club squash
It w*i generally a ease of the rich getting richer and the poor etaying that way in the A grade squash competition this v eek. Ail four contests in the mens grade were 10-0 victories and three of the four womens contests were clean sweeps. Christchurch A continued to set the pace in the men's grade with a 10-0 victory against the bottomplaced High School Old Boys B. Even without Rod Hayes, the Canterbury champion—having a «ell-earned rest—the top team was untroubled. John Oakley (Old Boys>, who went close to upsetting Lyn Sparks last week, was no match for the Old Boys No. 1. Barrie Matthews and was restricted to eight points in three games. Paul McFadaien (Christchurch) lost the first game to the hardhitting Ryan McCutcheon, but as McCutcheon tired and McFadden warmed up. the next three games were relatively easy for McFadden, who displayed a deft touch with the short drop shot. Trevor George came closest to • Inning a match for Old Boys. However, after winning the first two games, he succumbed to Bruce Trangmar. although George held an early advantage in the vital game The second-placed High School Old Bovs also won IM against Christchurch B Barry McNeil xw>n in straight sets, but John Pedpath and Viv Hargreaves both
dropped the first game before winning the next three convincingly. Lawrence Skurr followed the pattern by losing the first game against Roger Monk, but he, too, took the next three although Monk, often expressing his disgust held a game point in the fourth set. John Christensen, elevated to the top position in the Sumner side, showed the tenacity he oiten displays on the hockey field against the youthful Burnside B junior, Stuart Davenport. But Davenport matched Christensen for fitness and Ills slightly better stroke-making and placements gave him a three-game victory. Burnside A decisively disposed of Linwood and only Howard Marshall was capable of w inning a game off the Burnside team. Although the top women’s team, High School Old Boys A, beat Its second team, Maree Devine had a fine victory against Vai Dunstan 'Old Boys A'. It was a reversal of their first-round encounter Burnside A. winning one match by default, took maximum points against Christchurch B, but Rosie Davies managed to take a set off the accomplished Canterbury representative, Kathy Graham. Christchurch A beat the higher-placed Bumside B without losing a match. There was a good match between the topi
players, and Burnside’s No. I, Lyn Chamberlain looked set to Jrepeat her earlier win against ■ Phillipa Lush when sire won the | first and third games.
But it was all Miss Lush in the last two sets as her opponent tired and made fundamental errors. Sumner-Linwood was not really tested by Christchurch C and only Cherry Armitage pushed her opponent to an extra set. Points:— Men: Christchurch A 66, High School Old Boys A 58.
