Superannuation
Sir,—ln reference to J. F. Garvey’s letter (“The Press,” June 30) I reiterate by belief that benefits paid to high income age beneficiaries would (among other things) be put to better use in projects to earn overseas exchange. Regarding his concern about whether Labour will apply a means test at 60, a number of people including myself will be keen to know this. It will be of particular concern to wage earners, who, under the present scheme, are subsidising welfare benefits paid to high income beneficiaries who either hoard their money or take it out of the country on overseas tours. No economy could stand such large handouts.—Yours, N. SMITH. July 2, 1977. [This correspondence is now closed.—Editor]
