More-work call at Kaiapoi
Wellington reporter. The Government has been called on to ensure that alternative employment opportunities are created in Kaiapoi if the woollen mills there ■are closed. Mosgiel Woollens, Ltd, of j Dunedin, which took over the Kaiapoi woollen mill five years ago, announced on iWednesday that it would run| the mill down over the next 18 months to two years. The Opposition spokesman’ on women’s rights (Mrs MJ D. Batchelor) said that one of the most disturbing as-i pect of the closing was the! loss of job opportunities for! women. A large section of the Kaiapoi work force was female, i and there was little other, local employment available,' she said. “The Government’s economic policies have left many! women with no choice but to!
go out to work to feed and (clothe their families.” Mrs (Batchelor said. “It has a clear (duty to ensure that employ.jment opportunities are not .(thrown away.” j The member of Parliament ■| for Rangiora (Mr D. F. :;Quigley) said yesterday that i(he had arranged to meet lhe (Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Adams-Schneider) and the national secretary of the Woollen Workers’ Association (Mr L. A. Armitage) lin Wellington on Tuesday to discuss the issue. He said that he had already (had discussions with lhe (managing director of Mos(giel. Ltd (Mr J. S. Lee), and would arrange a meeting in (Kaiapoi soon that would include the Minister and regional-development officials. Mr Quigley will talk to the Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr B. <). (Williams) and Canterbury i union officials on Monday.
