B.H.P. mogul honoured
NZPA Canberra i A former chairman of Australia's largest company, Broken Hill Proprietary, Ltd. I has become only the third person to be made a Knight of the Order of Australia. He is Sir Colin York Syme, aged “4, chairman of B.H.P. from 1952 to 1971. who becomes a knight in the general division of the Order of Australia — a five-part order instituted by the former Labour Government. The only other Australians to be appointed Knights of the Order of Australia are (the Governor-General (Sir (John Kerr), the principal (Knight of the Order, and a (former Liberal Prime Minister iSir Robert Menzies, now aged 182. ; Sir Colin received his iknighthood for “extraordinary and meritorious service) to industry, particularly in! the fields of research and technology.” ' Three received the second-; (highest Australian honour—!' Mr Colin Milton (Thiele, was also made a Coml panion for service to literature and education, and a former Western Australian Labour Premier. Mr John Trezise Tonkin, received his Compan I ion award for eminent and meritorious service to politics and government. Rolf Harris heads the list of Australians honoured for their contribution to the arts and entertainment. ’Harris, who receives the 0.8. E., made his reputation in Britain and Australia as a television and radio person ality. artist, cartoonist, and i composer. I Richard Bonynge. the husband and manager of the operatic star. Joan Sutherland, is awarded the C.8.E.. and (the Tasmanian-born composer Peter Sculthorpe, aged 48. ; receives the C.B.E. for his work. ; Elizabeth Fretwell, a soprano with the Australian (Opera, receives the 0.8. E.. as does the painter. Charles Blackman, of Sydney; the ■violinist. Leonard Dommett. concert master of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; and Geoffrey Parsons, of (Sydney, a concert accompanlist.
