Environment centres

Sir, —Mrs J. R. Holms letter is intended as a reply to mine published on June 6, although it is not mentioned. I maintained that environment centres should not be over-ambitious, especially considering the limited funds available to the environmental movement, and should understand clearly that they are not action groups. May I remind Mrs Holm that the Christchurch centre amended its constitution last year, incorporating certain action clauses similar to those in which an environmental action group might embody its aims. To run the centre, something under $20,000 has been claimed necessary (“The Press,” Anri] 27). If New Zealand centres set their sights on sums of this order, collectively they would be seeking an amount which would certainly constitute the bulk, and probably the whole, of any nublic funding of the movement. Should environment centres by any chance obtain such amounts. action groups would remain their poor relations for a long time ahead. —Yours, etc., HELEN HER’’EY. Chairman, Environmental Vanguard Organisation. Jun,e 10, 1977.
