Emigration
Sir. — Mr Rowling states that 23,000 young people left
New Zealand in a single year (last year). My son was one of these. After working only three years he was able to save enough for a world trip. I know of many other boys in trades of all kinds who have done the same. One thing my son has learnt is how much worse off people are in Britain and other places. Prices are higher, wages are lower and hours are much longer. So many folk can go overseas these days from New Zealand because they earn good money and save it. They will be back when the money has run out. — Yours, etc., H. SMITH. Reefton. June 9, 1977.
