Sir.—Your headline “Media maligned” above a report that Mr Lapwood “strongly criticised the

news media” (“The Press,” June 8) is an example of the use of unnecessarily emotive words to colour otherwise factual news reports in a way which provoked Mr Lapwood’s comments. Mr Lapwood was expressing a criticism of the media which is currently shared by other readers and listeners, myself included. Such criticism does not justify the word “maligned” which according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary means to “slander,” i.e. “to utter a malicious false report.”—Yours, etc., R. D. GIBSON.
