Karamea-Collingwood road
Sir, —I have never been an opponent of a KarameaCollingwood Road that would be at least 10 miles from the Heaphy Track, but there do not appear to be many options with this qualification. Ten miles inland would put the route through some of the most rugged country in New Zealand, subject to snow and landslips throughout the year. In the other direction, 10 miles would put the road “all at sea” where a good number of the road supporters and their ideas seem to be. Was it coincidence that the report (May 30) backed on to “The Press” motto which states . nothing is useful without honesty? A little honesty would clear the track confusion. Can Messrs Mumm and Horne (of Buller
and Nelson) produce a map proving their claim and dispel the fears from my mind; or are we being subject to another political smoke screen? —Yours, etc., ARTHUR PETERS. May 31, 1977.
