Mt Hutt road crash

Five people are “really lucky to be alive” — according to the Ashburton police — their car plunged 100 m off the access road to the Mount Hutt ski-field yesterday. One man was admitted to Ashburton Hospital with shoulder injuries, but his condition was not serious. The other occupants of the car, a late model Mazda saloon, suffered only bruising and shock. A spokesman for the Ashburton police said that the car had failed to negotiate a downhill bend and careered more than 100 m down a steep, rocky bluff. The accident occurred at 5 p.m. about one mile and a half above the toll-gate on the Mount Hutt access road. The names of the car’s occupants were not available late last evening.
