PA Wellington The Government has decided to merge the Ministry of Energv Resources, the New Zealand Electricity Department, and the Mines Department into a single Energy Department. The new department will be responsible for all energy planning and operations. I The Minister of Energy Resources (Mr Gair) said he hoped that the new department would be functioning as a single unit “long before the end of this year.”
The single department will have a staff of between 8000: and 9000. Its new head is not expected to be named for several weeks. Mr Gair said there would be “one, or perhaps more posts” at top level, with an over-all head of the department.
